Chapter 11

Cadel

Zarela and I went to Memorial Hospital to check on our son. I hated hospitals. I felt dirty as fuck being in them. I felt I was surrounded by germs and tons of sick people. It made me uneasy. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to see my son, I just felt uncomfortable in this motherfucka.

We approached Mayur’s door and saw Mayur sleeping. He looked just like my ass. I couldn’t believe it. As we neared his bed, one of the machines went from Beep…beep…beep… to beeeeeeeeeeep.

My heart began beating a mile a minute. “Aye— aye yo! Somebody help my son,” I yelled out the door.

Immediately, a ton of nurses and doctors rushed into the room. Machines were beeping and there was utter chaos. I ran over towards my son and his lips were blue. I didn’t know what was happening. I started shaking my son as Zarela fell to the floor and cried. The nurses and doctors tried to hold me back and get me away, but I was a big nigga.

“What’s wrong with my boy? Let me go!” I roared. I was fighting with them like I was the Big Show on WWE. I looked like a giant compared to the staff. It took two doctors and four nurses to keep me at bay.

“We’re losing him!”

“Sir, please calm down. He has flat lined. Please, let the doctor’s work,” one of the nurses said calmly.

I couldn’t hear anything after my son flat lined. I stood there watching the doctors charge defibrillator paddles. Tears slipped from my eyes as I looked at my sons’ lifeless body whose cardiac monitor was showing a straight green line. They shocked my son and his tiny limped body arched off the bed. Seconds passed and the familiar waveform appeared on the monitor. They brought my son back to life! I grabbed Zarela and held her hand as we were ushered out the room. My mind was in all types of places.

“What happened to him?” Zarela asked with tears and snot all over her face.

“He went into cardiac arrest. For what reason, we aren’t sure yet. He’s stable now, and we will run some tests.”

“Will my baby be okay?” I asked.

“As of right now, we believe he will be. We just need more time to figure out more answers. Please, try to go home and get some rest. I know that’s easier said than done,” said the same doctor who performed the blood test.

“No, I want to see my son,” Zarela replied with tear-filled eyes.

“Ma’am, in order to do our job, you have to trust us. He’s in good hands.”

Reluctantly, we walked away. We got to the parking lot when my cell phone started ringing off the hook.

“What?” I barked into the phone. It was an unknown number and that was a sure way to get cursed out because I rarely gave my number out without saving theirs as well.

“Cadel, it’s me! Please talk to me. I’m pregnant and you are just ignoring me. I miss you,” Pumpkin cried.
